We are a cross-licensed family law trial practice. Three of our attorneys are licensed in Missouri, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. Our Missouri work is concentrated in Newton, Jasper, and McDonald Counties, in the courts of Joplin, Carthage, Neosho, and Pineville.

What Cross-licensure Means for Our Clients

Cross-licensure is the foundation of how we practice and is worth a great deal to clients with interests in any two or three of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Most family law clients whose matters touch more than one of these states are offered one option: hire a separate lawyer in each state and try to keep them coordinated. That option is expensive in ways that are easy to underestimate at the beginning. Intakes get done two or three times. Strategy drifts. What one firm learns about the family, the assets, the children, and what the client actually wants gets lost between firms. The coordination itself turns into its own line item, paid in hours, money, and the contradictions that show up when two teams are negotiating in two venues against two opposing parties with two sets of facts in front of them.

We are the firm for people who do not want to operate with that kind of arrangement. Our cross-licensed team handles the whole matter under one engagement. The lawyer representing the client in one state is the lawyer representing the client in the other two. The strategy is built once and used in every venue. The client signs one fee agreement, works with one team, and is represented across three states by the people who learned the matter at the first meeting.

For matters that involve a business, a larger estate, a custody fight, a relocation, or facts that cross a state line, one team in three states is the difference between a real representation and a coordination problem dressed up as one.

Our Trial Practice

Cross-state cases go to trial more often than single-state cases. The stakes tend to be higher, and the parties are usually further apart, geographically and otherwise. We treat every matter as one that could end up in front of a judge, and we prepare it that way from the first call.

We identify and connect with our witnesses. We build our exhibits. We work with our experts. We do not put it off until settlement falls apart. When we negotiate, we negotiate from a position of being ready to try the case.

We work alongside the other professionals who tend to be in the room on bigger matters, such as referring lawyers, financial advisors, CPAs, business valuators, business attorneys, trust and estate counsel, trustees, and family office staff. Working with outside professionals is part of how we do the job, not the exception to it.

The People We Serve

Due to our unique strengths and qualifications, we receive referrals from lawyers and advisors in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Dallas, Houston, San Francisco, Miami, London, and other places, and those referrals are a growing share of what we do. They come to us when a client has picked up some kind of tie to the Heartland: a former spouse who moved here, a business interest in one of our three states, real estate in the region, or a child who now lives here.

We represent Oklahoma residents with Missouri matters. Oklahoma clients whose former spouses or children have moved to Joplin, Carthage, Neosho, or the counties around them. Oklahoma clients named in Missouri custody, support, or modification cases. Oklahoma clients with land, a business, or other exposure across the Missouri line.

We represent Arkansas residents with Missouri matters. Northwest Arkansas clients whose custody cases now involve children in Jasper County and nearby. Arkansas families with a business or property across the Missouri line. Arkansas clients facing Missouri filings, enforcement, or modification.

We represent Missouri residents with Oklahoma or Arkansas matters. Clients in Joplin, Carthage, Neosho, and Pineville whose former spouses are now in Oklahoma or Arkansas. Missouri clients with property, a business, or family on the other side of either line. Missouri clients who need to enforce or change an order entered in Oklahoma or Arkansas.

We built this law firm firm around the reality that family law in this region often crosses state lines, and that the right answer for the client is a team that does not have to. If you have a matter that fits, or you advise a client who does, we welcome your call.
